Classical Pilates journey

I discovered I had an S curve spine and was diagnosed with scoliosis. I had a lot of back pain and hunching over during my then profession as an optometrist exacerbated the pain. I was recommended to do Pilates and I joined the gym and started taking Mat Pilates classes 19 years ago. I noticed to see the benefits of pilates and my posture improved and my back pain was much better. The teacher was a Pilates teacher from New York. Reflecting on the exercises he taught it was a Classical Mat Pilates class.

Managing the pain from the scoliosis was ongoing with visits to the physio, Chiro, acupuncturist and getting massages. These treatments were short lived. Sometimes I would wake up with back pain in the middle of the night.

In 2011, I moved to nyc and started taking ‘Tower classes’ and Pilates classes on the apparatus (reformer, chair, barrel). It was the most amazing feeling in my body. The pilates class was so hard but my spine felt so ‘straight’ and it was nothing I had ever experienced. I was immediately hooked with this feeling of being aligned, stretched and open. I was so happy after the class. All the while my back pain stopped!

I retuned to Sydney and on my pursuit to continue my love for pilates, I went to several different pilates studios. There were no Tower Pilates classes to be found either. The feeling in my body was just not the same. It wasn’t the same amazing feeling I experienced in nyc.

I soon returned to NYC to undertake the Classical Pilates teacher certification program to learn more about pilates for myself. Joseph Pilates opened his FIRST pilates studio in NYC. I took the classical pilates training which is the original teaching of Joseph Pilates. As a client I did not realise there were different schools of Pilates. I soon realised the feeling in my body felt different because I was taught a different style of Pilates back in Sydney.

I was so happy to come across the Classical Pilates teaching in New York and I was able to immerse myself into this wonderful traditional teaching. I took lessons from third generation teachers of Joseph Pilates himself. Teachers who had learnt so much from Joseph Pilates’s students. I am so excited to be able to travel back to nyc and take more lessons and learn more about teaching and about the body from third generation teachers of Joseph Pilates next month.

  1. I have been attending Tower Pilates classes with both Amy and Vivian 2 or 3 times a week for 3 years.
I recently commenced reformer classes and now include both classes in my weekly routine. I feel great, I leave
the gym feeling energised and have not had a sore back for years. Tower pilates trains you to engage your core without even thinking about it. Amy and her staff are amazing, ever watchful and quick to advise.
Thanks Amy, your success is well deserved.
